SU President discusses "Readings from Octavio Paz" November 21

SALISBURY, MD ---Salisbury University presents "Readings from Octavio Paz" as part of its Cinco Estrallas ("five stars") Series on Latin America's Nobel Laureates in Literature on Thursday, November 21, at 7 p.m. at the Fireside Lounge, Guerrieri University Center.

Essayist, poet and diplomat, Paz was one of the great public intellectuals of 20th century Mexico. For most of the second half of the century, his essay "The Labyrinth of Solitude" was considered the foundational statement about the Mexican national character. Paz was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1990.

University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach leads the discussion in both English and Spanish. She completed undergraduate studies in Spanish and Latin American studies at Indiana University and earned her doctorate in Hispanic literature at El Colegio De Mexico in Mexico City. In 1980 Dudley-Eshbach undertook post-doctoral study in Chile on a Fulbright-Hays Grant.

Photocopies of the readings are available on reserve in the Blackwell Library. (Ask for the "Cinco Estrallas" file.)

Admission is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum Programs. Light refreshments will be served. For more information, call 410-543-6271 or visit the SU Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
