Welsh participates in literature/film conferences

SALISBURY, MD ---Dr. Jim Welsh, professor of English and editor of Literature/Film Quarterly at Salisbury University, recently co-directed the annual conference of the Literature/Film Association at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, where he also presented a paper on the topic of biography and film.

He introduced plenary speaker Christine Whittaker of the BBC Television archives in London. Whittaker, whom Welsh had personally invited to the conference, currently serves as president of the International Association for Media and History. The IAMH held its international congress at SU in 1977 under Welsh's leadership.

In November Welsh served as area chair for film adaptations at the Film and History League Conference on the American West in Kansas City, MO. He presented his research on "The 'Twilight' Western in the Shadow of Vietnam."

Welsh worked on four books that were on exhibit at the Kansas City Country Club Plaza Marriott. Published by Facts on File and its subsidiary, Checkmark Books, they are: Shakespeare Into Film, The Encyclopedia of Filmmakers, The Encyclopedia of Stanley Kubrick and the Encyclopedia of Alfred Hitchcock.

Editors representing five specialized academic journals were represented at the conference: Literature/Film Quarterly, Film & History, The Journal of Popular Culture, The Journal of Popular Film and Wide Angle.

Welsh was joined at the Kansas City conference by Donald M. Whaley and Dr. Maarten Pereboom of SU's History Department.
