Flamenco comes to SU November 13

SALISBURY, MD ---Salisbury University's Office of Cultural Affairs and Museum programs presents, back by popular demand, the drama and passion of flamenco dancer Micaela Morena and classical guitarist Miguel Perez on Wednesday, November 13, at 7 p.m. in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

Flamenco is considered the national dance of Spain and an integral part of Spanish-heritage music, dance and folklore. Audiences have long been captivated by this art form characterized by song ("Cante"), dance ("Baile") and guitar accompaniment ("Guitarra"). Born in the Andalusia region of 18th century Spain, flamenco dancing features festive traditional costumes and rhythmic guitar. Shows can include diverse styles of music such as jazz or salsa.

As a young girl, Morena first started dancing flamenco in Rockville, MD, under the tutelage of Ena Camargo and later Anna Menendez. She has performed for several embassies and at Latino festivals throughout the Washington, D.C. area.

Perez, who took up the guitar at the age of 8, began studying flamenco in his senior year at California State University Fullerton where he earned his bachelor's degree in music. He performs regularly for flamenco dance companies in Washington, D.C.

A flamenco dance master class is offered before the performance from 5-6 p.m. onstage in Holloway Hall Auditorium.

The performance and the master class, free and open to the public, are part of SU's fall Latin American Culture Series. Call 410-543-6271 for more information or visit the Salisbury University Web site at www.salisbury.edu.
