Employment Law and EEO Update Conference offered Dec. 4

SALISBURY, MD ---An Employment Law and EEO Update Conference 2002, coordinated by the Center for Professional Development at Salisbury University, is on Wednesday, December 4 from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Commons building Worcester Room on the SU campus.

Sponsored by Shawe & Rosenthal LLP, law firm, Management's Workplace Lawyers the conference is an annual review of major developments regarding workplace laws and regulations. Four major topics are covered: EEOC and employee relations issues dealing with Affirmative Action; Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) update; labor law update; and processing complaints--effective in-house investigations.

EEOC and employee relations issues include a review of current legislation, (FLSA) Fair Labor Standards Act, exempt vs. non-exempt status changes, progressive discipline and structuring terminations, age issues and discrimination, mergers and acquisitions and EEO issues, Title VII, same sex protection in Maryland and discussions of recent case studies.

ADA issues include better understanding terminology such as "disability" and qualified," who is covered and why, exemptions, how the law applies to human resources directors and business owners, reasonable accommodations, major life activities rulings, and (FMLA) Family Medical Leave Act, ADA and Worker's Compensation and how they relate to one another.

The labor law discussion features current legislation, mediation and arbitration, ADR process in Maryland and Delaware, company policy and procedure for internal and external mediation, and local mediation sources.

The complaint process session presents practical strategies and approaches, stressing the need for confidentiality while gathering necessary information to resolve a complaint. A review of the recent National Labor Relations Board decision with the Epilepsy Foundation will be discussed.
