Relay For Life at SU Raises over $48,000

By SU Public Relations

SALISBURY, MD---The Salisbury University community came together to raise more than $48,000 for cancer awareness, research, services and education at the 24th annual SU Relay For Life.

The event kicked off with a speech from SU President Carolyn Ringer Lepre, who shared her story about losing her mother to cancer.

More than 400 students participated in the event, enjoying activities including human-sized hamster balls; line dancing; and performances by Housing Co., Allie Donovan, Sqwuakapella, the SU Pep Band, the Golden Gulls dance team and the Knights of Bury lightsaber dueling group.

Seven students had their hair cut by a local salon, the Hair Show. The locks have been donated to Children with Hair Loss, an organization that for 25 years has provided human hair replacement to children at no cost.

At dusk, speakers Hope and Kathi Michael shared their cancer story to begin the Luminaria lap, a silent walk around the track in honor and remembrance.

Team and individual contests and games filled the evening as the SU men’s and women’s swimming teams won the “Relay Rival” competition for the second year in a row.

The Perdue Business Leaders team, led by finance major Brendan Birch of Snow Hill, MD, raised the most money in honor of Birch’s father, who passed way in February from pancreatic cancer. Kayla Pedersen, SU Relay for Life president, of Hummelstown, PA, was the individual top fundraiser.
