SALISBURY, MD---Salisbury University hosts the workshop and concert “Sounds of the Alhambra” by the Al Firdaus Ensemble 5 p.m. Thursday, October 24, in the Great Hall of Holloway Hall.
The ensemble’s musicians combine Sufi poetry with various musical styles, including Classical Western and Celtic, as well as flamenco. During the workshop, they discuss Islamic musical modes (maqams), equivalent to musical notes in the West. Each mode is designed to evoke a particular emotional state. A short concert follows.
Sponsored by the Glenda Chatham and Robert G. Clarke Honors College and Fulton Public Humanities Program, admission is free and the public is invited. Those planning to park on campus must register in advance for a free parking pass.
