Library Events

Banned Books Week is an annual observance event that celebrates the freedom to read and takes place at the end of September/early October. Books showcased during Banned Books Week have all been banned or challenged in some capacity from schools and libraries for what is considered to be “offensive” content. Each year, SU Libraries plans displays and events to engage the campus community in a discussion surrounding censorship and the freedom to read.

“Destress Before the Tests” is held leading up to and during the final exam period, providing students an opportunity to unwind at the end of the semester. The Destress event includes two components—the Relaxation Station and the Finals Fairy. The Relaxation Station includes free hot drinks and short activities to distract and relax students, such as jigsaw puzzles, coloring books, Lego competitions and yoga. The Finals Fairy leaves small prizes for students throughout the Guerrieri Academic Commons and Curriculum Resource Center, with clues to find those prizes posted to the Libraries’ social media accounts.

Partnering with the LGBTQ+ Alliance, the SU Libraries holds a clothing drive and Walk-in Closet in honor of Transgender Awareness month. While the 2-day walk-in closet event is open and welcoming to all, its primary purpose is to provide free gender-affirming clothing to those in need.

Sponsored by SU Psychology Department in the Fulton School of Liberal Arts, the SU Libraries host this event annually. The program is organized by the Transgender Interprofessional Care Team (TICT), which features a library representative, and consults with the TICT Community Advisory Board in planning. This interactive event particularly caters to students and professionals in different industries related to health care and social work wishing to learn about providing gender-affirming care and similar, timely topics. This event coincides with the Transgender Day of Remembrance and typically features a vigil for those being remembered.
