F-1 Employment Options: CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT
Overview
F-1 students at Salisbury University may be eligible for off-campus employment opportunities through Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and the STEM OPT Extension. These programs allow students to gain practical experience related to their field of study while maintaining their F-1 status.
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT is temporary employment authorization for F-1 students that is directly related to their major and part of their academic program. CPT must be authorized by the Designated School Official (DSO) before employment begins.
If a student is interested in applying for CPT, they should contact the Center for International Education.
Eligibility:
- Must be in valid F-1 status
- Must have completed one full academic year
- Employment must be an integral part of the curriculum

Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT allows F-1 students to work in a position directly related to their major field of study. It can be used before or after completion of the academic program. Students must apply for OPT through USCIS using Form I-765. Students are encouraged to submit the Form I-765 using the online filing option. This option is less expensive and has faster processing times.
Types of OPT:
- Pre-Completion OPT: Work authorization before graduation
- Post-Completion OPT: Work authorization after graduation

STEM OPT Extension
Students who have earned a degree in a DHS-approved STEM field may be eligible for a 24-month extension of their post-completion OPT. The STEM OPT Extension requires a formal training plan (Form I-983) and employer participation.
